Staged bets and checkpoints
A long investment structured to deliver intermediate value where it can, with its near-term cost stated honestly, commitment secured before it starts, and explicit checkpoints at which to double down or fold. This is how a two-year platform bet survives a quarter's urgency, and how a disruptive bet is sized so that it teaches something.
Evidence grade: practice A widely adopted practitioner model with clear provenance.
Use it when
Any multi-year platform investment; any bet on a disruptive technology; the existential priority that the organisation must fund by subtraction.
Where it stops working
Staging can break up a bet whose value only arrives when it is whole. The judgment lies in finding the intermediate value without pretending it exists.
