The Staff+ track
The senior individual-contributor path (staff, principal and beyond) as a career of equal standing to management. It has several distinct archetypes, and it recognises the coordinating and quality-raising work that otherwise goes unrewarded.
Evidence grade: practice A widely adopted practitioner model with clear provenance.
Use it when
Any career conversation with a strong engineer; any promotion process that has only a management path.
Where it stops working
A track that appears on the ladder but not in the scopes and pay the organisation offers exists in name only. A manager who cannot describe it cannot offer it honestly.
Where the standard uses it
- PL-5Career development and growth pathsOne-on-ones, promotions, the Staff+ track, and the IC/manager choice.
