The SPACE framework
No single metric captures developer productivity. Five dimensions (satisfaction and wellbeing, performance, activity, communication and collaboration, efficiency and flow) are measured in balance. The framework serves as a check against one-dimensional measurement.
Evidence grade: practice A widely adopted practitioner model with clear provenance.
Use it when
Any proposed productivity metric. One that sits in a single dimension, and especially one that measures activity alone, is incomplete by construction.
Where it stops working
It comes from a framework paper and is not an empirical finding. It says what to balance and gives no weighting.
Where the standard uses it
- SV-5Engineering metrics and measurementChoosing, interpreting, and not gaming them, including measuring AI impact.
