Portfolio governance
An explicit, ranked and deliberately small set of concurrent initiatives at organisational scale, reviewed against evidence on a cadence. The ranking is used to settle contention for resources by strategy instead of by politics.
Evidence grade: practice A widely adopted practitioner model with clear provenance.
Use it when
Thirty priority-ones; scarce senior people fought over by sponsors; a failing initiative kept alive by its sponsor.
Where it stops working
If the ranking is not published, or not used to settle the next contention, it decays back into the politics it replaced.
Where the standard uses it
- DE-1Prioritisation under constraintSequencing, trade-offs, saying no.
Used alongside it
- Cost of delay practice
- Trade-off transparency practice
- Urgent versus important practice
- Work-in-progress limits and flow practice
