Systems understanding over currency
The knowledge that matters for leading is the map of the system (its shape, risks and dependencies, and who understands each part). A manager keeps the map by reading designs and code without becoming an approver, staying in the room for hard decisions, and rotating deep dives. Depth in the code is a different thing, and trying to keep it while managing usually fails at both jobs.
Evidence grade: practice A widely adopted practitioner model with clear provenance.
Use it when
Every manager who has stopped coding daily; every executive tempted to intervene in a stack that has moved on.
Where it stops working
It rests on experience. The failure it describes, expertise frozen at the last hands-on year, is easy to recognise, but the map decays too if the reading stops.
Where the standard uses it
- TJ-4Technical credibility and interventionStaying close enough to judge, and knowing when to step in.
Used alongside it
- Installing a decision process practice
- One-way and two-way doors practice
- Task-relevant maturity practice
- The executive docket practice
- The intervention threshold practice
