The operating cadence
The organisation's rhythm of planning, review and escalation. A good one is light and rolling against stable priorities, with portfolio reviews based on evidence, explicit escalation triggers, and time set aside for correction. At scale, being responsive improves execution, and more detailed central planning does not.
Evidence grade: practice A widely adopted practitioner model with clear provenance.
Use it when
Quarterly planning that eats weeks and produces a stale plan; designing how an organisation senses and responds.
Where it stops working
A rolling cadence is harder to explain to stakeholders who want the reassurance of a detailed plan, and it needs stable priorities to roll against.
