You're looking at a resume or a LinkedIn profile, and there's a credential on it — "EMA-I," or something like it, sitting next to the candidate's job titles. It's meant to signal that this person can lead engineers. The question isn't whether it looks impressive. It's whether it means anything at all.
That's a fair question, because the credential market in engineering leadership is not consistent. Some credentials are earned. Many are simply issued.
The problem: most "credentials" are just attendance records
Here's the uncomfortable reality: a large share of "engineering leadership" certificates in circulation today require nothing more than showing up. You pay, you attend a course or a webinar series, you get a PDF with your name on it. There's no independent test of whether you can actually do the job — no scenario where the candidate has to make a call under ambiguity, handle a conflict, or reason about a tradeoff, and get it checked against a standard.
That doesn't make those programs worthless as learning experiences. It makes them worthless as signals. A completion certificate tells you someone sat through a course. It tells you nothing about whether they can lead — yet the two get treated as interchangeable on a resume, and most hiring managers don't have an easy way to tell them apart at a glance.
This matters more in engineering management than in most hiring decisions, because the cost of getting it wrong is high. A manager who can't triage an incident, can't have a hard conversation about underperformance, or folds under scope pressure degrades an entire team's output — not just their own. If you're going to lean on a credential as one input into that decision, it needs to have actually tested for the thing you care about.
What to actually check
Before you give any weight to a credential on a candidate's profile, run it through four questions.
Is it assessment-based, or just attendance-based? Ask directly: was there a pass/fail bar, or did completion alone earn the credential? If the answer is "I attended the sessions," that's a training record, not a certification. A real credential has a defined exam with a bar you have to clear — and a real possibility of not clearing it.
Can you verify it independently, or are you trusting the candidate's word? This is the easiest check to run and the one most hiring managers skip. If the only proof is a claim on a resume or a badge image anyone could screenshot, you have no way to confirm it's real. A credential worth trusting is verifiable by a third party — you, not the candidate — without needing their cooperation or an account of your own.
Does it test judgment, or just recall? Terminology recall is the easiest thing to assess and the least useful thing to know about a manager. Can they define "servant leadership" or list the stages of team formation? Fine, but that's not the job. The job is judgment under real conditions — what do you do when two senior engineers disagree on architecture and the deadline is in a week? A credential worth trusting is built around scenarios like that, not vocabulary.
Is it specific to engineering leadership, or a general credential wearing an engineering hat? A huge number of "leadership" certifications on the market are generic project-management or Agile-facilitation credentials, repurposed and marketed at engineers. Nothing wrong with those on their own terms — but they weren't built to test whether someone can lead a technical team or earn the trust of senior engineers. Check whether the body of knowledge behind the credential was actually written for engineering leadership, or adapted from something broader.

None of this is EMA-specific advice, really — it's the standard any credential should meet before it earns space in your hiring decision. Was there a real pass/fail bar? Can you check it yourself? Did it test judgment or just vocabulary? Was it purpose-built for the job you're hiring for?
Most credentials in this space fail at least one of those questions. That's not a reason to ignore credentials — it's a reason to know which ones to trust.
